Growing up my favorite show was Law & Order. I am not sure exactly what about it made me curl up on the couch at night to watch. I loved it, reruns, new episodes, special guests. I just couldn’t get enough. Except, when I was pregnant I felt very emotional and every time it was on I found myself crying and shuddering at the horrific crime being portrayed. Usually it was some sort of sexual crime in nature that violated a child. So as the months went by I took a much needed hiatus from my favorite show looking forward to post-partum days and steadier hormones.
That days has still not come. Two & half years later, I cannot watch Law&Order due to the realistic events the show portrays. It can very easily keep me up at night wondering what the probability of my child being a victim of one of those crimes. Many times a gruesome scene of a bloody child is shown. That is just enough for me. When I became a parent I learned how to share the pain of any parent. Even though it is fiction it remind me of the awful things in the news. So now I stick to Max & Ruby and Sesame Street. We are all happier that way.
