I cannot express how much I love Elvis. His birthday was this weekend and if still alive he would have been 76 years old. There is no such thing as a favorite Elvis song because they are all great. One day when the boys grow up I plan to visit Graceland. Until then, Happy Birthday Elvis!
Music in our memories
As I drove to the dentist this morning I heard a song that took me way back. You know the kind. You hear the song and you are instantly lifted out of your surrounding into wherever this song first made an impression on you or your life.
This kind of memory association can even evoke the smells, the way the weather felt, where we were…..so many things
The song I heard today was by Tears for Fears Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
While I am sure many of you remember this song, I can simple close my eyes and go back to when I was 8 years old.
Wearing a red bathing suit, I was standing in our family’s cabin in Vermont. It was late afternoon and we were heading back down to the beach for Happy Hour. I can smell the Coppertone lotion I was most likely covered with and the peaches that were in the window ripening. My skin was warm from the day’s sun giving me a nice little sunburn. My Dad was there too. He had on a yellow fishing hat and I think he still had his mustache. I was waiting for him to give me the cooler of grape Kool-Aid, it was my job to carry down to the beach.
All this was happening as the song was on the radio, not a DVD, CD or IPOD, on the radio. It was the Summers hit song that year. I heard it many times before we went home and it has been ingrained in mind probably for the rest of my life.
What is your song?
